“I was visiting my mother where she worked in Irvine, California, and we got self-serve frozen yogurt. We didn't have that in Baltimore, and when I came back home I was like, “Okay, this is what I have to do.” And finally, it happened. So Afters was the first self-serve frozen yogurt in Baltimore."
"During my first five years in business, I was always at work. I really didn’t have much time to spend with my daughter. Around the same time, my wife and daughter had to go to Seoul, Korea for a family matter. My wife had a grandmother who was 106 years old and my wife’s father, who is eighty-some years old, had been taking care of his mother all by himself.
My wife and daughter ended up staying in Korea for a couple of years to take care of the family, while I ran the business here."
"Being alone all of that time—it taught me a lot of lessons. Since my wife and daughter came back to the United States, I’ve been hiring enough employees to help me out. Sometimes it’s not profitable, especially in the winter, but I can say that I try to spend at least one full day a week with family.
Those two years were a big turning point for me. I had a chance to look at the past, the importance of family, and what it means to be a father."
